WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO ATTEND!
After pay freezes and pay caps since 2010, you have unfairly borne the brunt of public service cuts in your own pockets. When your wages rise more slowly than the cost of living, it is a pay cut by any other name. This is ultimately down to the underfunding of public services by Government. Yet a Government can only do what our people will vote for and the recent General Election , and opinion polls imply that this has gone on long enough. We need to exert maximum pressure to get the cap lifted and enable public service workers to start to make up what has been lost.
UNISON, along with other trade unions, have been raising the unfairness of this through our political campaigning. You will note from the news that the Government are wavering on the cap, but have only offered minimal amounts more to police and prison officers this year. Any change for the vast majority of public service workers remains a vague promise for the future.
Yet if you live or work in a marginal constituency you could have a special chance change the course of public policy in years to come. If it were to be made crystal clear to your MP the difficulties you face making ends meet and the unfairness of working harder than ever to hold vital services together amidst cuts in funding, then now is the time that this may help make the difference.
In particular we intend to emphasise that services are delivered by full teams of workers and it will not be acceptable to single out workers with a high public profile and leave the rest behind. We are all in this together.
Wherever you live, please come along to one of our our public meetings. Hear about our plans to take your concerns into the heart of government. This public meeting is a continuing part of our ongoing campaign. Come and hear what we are doing, how you can get involved and give us your views.
This is one of a number being held across the North West in the coming weeks (see leaflet above).
Look forwards to seeing you on the day..
