In recent years we have witnessed a growing climate of hostility towards Muslims. The Government seems to be adding to this by using the PREVENT anti terrorism agenda to further stigmatise the Muslim community.  This creates a public duty on many of our employers to ’prevent people being drawn into terrorism’ and to implement the ‘Prevent’ agenda.

Trade unionists oppose terrorism, and public sector trade unionists around the world are often at the sharp end of this struggle.  We have that in common with the overwhelming majority of Muslims who not merely deplore terrorism, but are often its main victims.

To target a whole community for a handful of political extremists is as wrong as implying most white Britons support fascism because Hitler was white. Yet worse than this, as Andy Burnham, Shadow Home Secretary said recently of David Cameron on this, “His clumsy and simplistic approach to challenging extremism is unfairly stigmatising a whole community. There is a real danger that it could end up driving further radicalisation, rather than tackling it.

Come and hear how the PREVENT agenda is bringing Islamaphobia into our workplaces and communities.  It could affect you and your members in your workplace.  Also what, as trade unionists, can we do to challenge this racist environment?  Please come along and help us to discuss a way forward.

ALL TRADE UNIONISTS IN THE NORTH WEST WELCOME.
